Cabrillo students were invited to one of English for Specific Purposes courses this morning. The students in this class are majoring in psychology, nursing, health care, and ECE, and what they have in common is that they are interested in raising awareness of “Global Englishes”. Nancy and Candice introduced themselves, showing some photos.

After their self-introductions, they were asked to show some finger play songs which are often used to get kids attention and have fun with movements in preschools. In the photo, they are demonstrating “Open, shut them.”  This is very similar to Japanese children’s song called, “Close hands, Open hands”(Musunde, hiraite). The students in this class seemed to feel embarrassed to sing and act like children at first but to end up enjoying themselves.

They went out of campus this afternoon with our students. They visited Meiji shrine dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji.Meiji shrine is the largest Shinto shrine in Tokyo. The shrine and the adjacent Yoyogi Park make up a large forested area within the densely built-up city, just like Central Park in New York.

The garden inside the shrine becomes popular during the middle of June when the irises are in bloom. Unfortunately, they have gone now but instead water lilies are fully blooming on the pond.
